Planes and train event 2019

The annual Planes, Trains and Automobiles trip has long since been a favourite in the Reefsteamers calendar and is well supported by both the vintage plane and car organisations of Gauteng. But of course the highlight this year is being behind our great lady Susan who is celebrating her grand centenary birthday.

Travel back in time with us to the historic town of Magaliesburg.  Your steam powered time machine will meet you at Johannesburg Park Station where our friendly train crew will assist you on board for an experience of a life time.

With every chuff of the engine you are slowly transported back to a time long forgotten.  Where speed was not the goal of the day but rather to watch the changing landscape out the window and feel the cool breeze in your hair.  But be careful that those men in their marvellous flying machines don’t steal your breakfast roll. As we approach Magaliesburg you may see a vintage car or two or even a pedal powered motobike wizz past.

The return journey, through meandering hills, is the highlight of this journey and worth the day out.  Our engines, manned by volunteer crew, work to their utmost ability pulling the coaches through some very steep climbs and gradients, making steam music all the way.

While on board you can enjoy the offerings of our Food Truck on Rails and their yummy breakfast rolls, tea treats and beverages.  All proceeds of the sales of these goodies go to helping preserve our coaches and engines.

Don’t forget to take a memento of the day home with you from our memorabilia table.

There are many things to do in Magaliesburg during your 3 hour visit and you can find a quaint restaurant (www.magaliesmeander.co.za).

What are you allowed to bring on the train?  This is a very popular question and here is the answer – you can bring along a cooler box (or two), deck chairs to use at Magaliesburg, meat to braai (and braai equipment, such as tongs etc), alcohol (although over indulgence is not tolerated on the train), snacks, cooldrinks etc.
